Information for thought:

Doctor Blades vs. Meter Rolls

To the operator, an ink metering system is a means of controlling the amount of ink being presented to the plates and subsequent substrates. Many presses operate using a three-roll system {basically consisting of the meter in the ink pan and a meter taking the ink off the anilox roller}, but due to the many great advances that have taken place with the development of blade systems, operators now have a choice. Here are a few points to remember.

Doctor Blade System

The anilox roller must be in reasonably good condition to start with.
The doctor blade must be designed and manufactured for the specific application.
The doctor blade must be accurately aligned and adjusted to the anilox roll.
The doctor blade and anilox must be given sufficient maintenance to prevent deterioration.

  • Steel blades are recommended for chrome and LEC anilox rollers.
  • FR {fiberglass} composite blades were developed specifically for LEC and should never be used on chrome anilox rollers.

Meter Rolls

Use correct rubber material for the job requirements:
  • Buna Nitrile {BN} is strictly for water-based inks.
  • Ethylene Propylene Dilene Monomer {EPDM} can be used with a variety of inks.
  • Use controlled paralleled contact with other rolls.
  • Release from other roll contact when not turning.
Use the right durometer for the anilox roller:
  • 65 durometer for 360 LPI or below,
  • 75-85 durometer for 360-500 LPI,
  • 85 durometer is for 550 LPI or higher.

Taking these factors into account with an 800 LPI laser engraved ceramic roller, either an 85 durometer meter roll or a Steel or FR {Fiberglass} doctor blade can be used to meter the ink. Often it comes down to a matter of operator preference.
